Senior project update

Content:

(1) What are you currently doing in your independent component?
For my independent component, I am currently still dloing my mentorship hours at Delovely daycare. I really do appreciate the time i get to spend helping at the daycare, to add I would like to do some type of volunteer work as well at a childrens hospital soon.

(2) What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project?  The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November.  Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.Alot of articles that I read have different information, so that I'm always learning something new. But something within this month that has significant the most was when purther assesed my EQ with the class. It's so that my previous EQ probally wouldn't have cut it, so he helped me in a sense to make me have to take the next step and find more depth within childlife specialist. He also gave suggestions such as to include how to help a child with a certain disease cope.
(3) Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did.  ....Here is a picture I took with my cell phone of a few of the children I work with at the daycare having lunch together.

Blog #7: Independent Component Approval

Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.

As of right now I am still thinking of a solid plan for my independent component. So far, since I've been doing my mentorship at a childrens daycare, I would like to get more into the hospital setting and do mentorship at a well known hospital . I have two places in mind where i could be able to get invovled, City of Hope in Duarte and The Mattel children's hopsital in Los Angeles. At these places I would be able to do things such as work at events involving the sick patients, and being able to be there side to side by them.

Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.

I know for a fact that if i do go along with my plan, I will meet the required 30 hours easily. For me it is a really great thing that hopsitals have strict requirments about the minimum of hours I must work there. I will be able to voulunteer either once or twice a week and do at least 3-4 hours each time.

How does your independent study component relate to your working EQ?

My independent study will help me alot by relating to my working EQ in many ways. For one I would get the real experience of being in the hospital setting. Also, I will be able to not only get the feel of working with children, but I would get hands on experience with working with actual hospitalized children who are ill.

Working EQ

The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: As a result as in what I have completed so far, I have gained alot more knowledge of child life specialist. With this gain of information, I thankfully seem much more confident in my topic. After reading alot of my research, I have also gained much respect for the people who work as child life specialist and I can honestly say now that my eyes are starting to open more towards the ones who need any emotional or physical support.

(2) EQ Content:  In one of my research pieces written called, "Cool Job: Help kids cope with hospital stays", it goes over a typical day in the life of Elise Ehrenreich. This article has been the most effective so within my resaerch. I can definately say that this article til this moment makes me think more of only the positve in this feild. I also was able to hear about a a day at her job as a child life specialist, and I was able to get a grasp of what to expect.

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project? So Far what is working about my senior project is the amounts of research I have been able to get. No matter what i feel that with my topic, there is more and more I could learn everytime.

(4) What hasn't worked so far?  Something that hasn't really settled for me is where to get the rest of my mentor hours. With my topic I would love to be able to actually get to see and do mentorship really similar within my topic, but there is too much of a privacy issue, which is understandable. What also is slowing me down, is the nerves about finding the best way to do my science fair project.

(5) Finding Value:  Based on your experience so far, no matter what worries I've came across, I know that with alot of what I've been doing so far everything seems just right. I have a really good feeling that My topic of choice is going to be able to please me til the end.
  •  What possible question or questions come to mind regarding what you would like to study this year

1) What are some types of trairts that are mandatory as a childlife specialist?
2) How come Child life programs are limited ?
  •  What is your end goal this year with your senior project Who would you like to talk to you next? Why?

my goal at the end of my senior project is to be able to know so much about my topic and its feild, that I would end up saying everything that i end up doing is going to be easy. I also am looking foward to the day of my presentation because I know many students don't know a thing about my topic, So I hope i interest someone else towards that feild. Who I would talk to next is the person I interveived, Jo Ann Namm. I would love to speak to her again because I feel like there is still so much information and help she can give because she's been working in that feild for quit sometime.

SF Blog A : Problem Statement

1) topic: Child life specialist

2) issue #1 : child life programs only exist in certain hospitals .
Hopefully when i solve this issue , I would publish an article convincing a public people near a  hospital without the program to sign a petition or request budget for it.
3) issue #2: The public has mis understandings and is uneduated about this profession.

Blog#2

What I plan on sticking too for my senior project topic is "child life specialist". At the start of processing ideas for my senior topic, I was looking more towards the child development area, such as daycare. The reason why I felt this wasn't the best topic for me at first was because I had another interest leaning towards the medical feild. As I took more time to develop the best idea, I came across the idea of a child life specialist from my mom. She suggested it while at the same time I had no idea what hat even was. I began to briefly research what a child life specialist was, and I began to feel confident that the specific topic was the one. I confirmed this topic mostly because of the fact it is a mixture of child involment and the medical feild. What drove me more towards this topic was the fact that I had a wonderful experience with having a child life specialist .

iPoly Citizen:  I plan to connect with the children who are undergoing some type of medical situation or illness. This relates to the me improving as a iPoly citizen because I feel it would give me the want and need to open up to many more people, such as my class mates. I feel this would condition me to the skill of always having the ability to want to listen. This skill is definately a good thing because the ability to listen can be all a person needs to get through a certain problem or situation.

Effective Communicator:  I plan to make children feel better with the words that come out of my mouth. This will make me more effective as a learner because in order to hel someone cope through a situation or rough time , I am a person would have to learn more and more each day wise words to help someone feel better

Effective Learner:  I plan to make list and document about things i've learned and am learning based on my topic. This will make me more effective as a learner because I can tie in much better the connections my topic has with the outer world.

Effective User of Technology: I plan to use internet to help alot with my research. This will make me more effective as a user of technology because the more i began to research, I can learn to find ways of getting more efficient articles or documents to help make getting real facts about my topic much more easier.

·       Contact Name & Number:

** Dalilah Calderon**

     cell: (626) 859-4584

Literal  ~What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience?

- what is least liked about having to look after a child ?
- What is the best way to make the child feel comfortable around you ?
- What type of training is required in order to be certified ?
- Are children ever transported ?
- How do you handle certain situations of emergencies ?

Interpretive ~What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

The most important thing i gained from this mentorship experience overall , is a better feel of being around children. I concider that fact really important.  Regardless of if im working at a daycare of not, it is still a very good idea to get the feel of being around children simply because they are everywhere! From when i started til the day i ended i can also say i gained much more  patience and the ability to be much more observant of little things.

Applied ~How did what you did help you choose a topic?

Before actually being around the facility, i was second guessing my topic. I was even thinking about doing a topic on something that didn't even have to do with kids at all, something more on the medical side. But as i was getting involved at the daycare i became once again interested with a topic that had to do with kids. I can honestly say that i had a wonderful time with looking after the group of children. After thinking through the whole experience , I was reminded of how great it feels to be there fore someone in need. When all my final thoughts came together about everything, i knew there was something better out there that had similar concepts of a daycare and something medical wise. I know that a topic on child life specialist would be perfect for me because i admire the medical feild and I was able to learn from my mentorship that i can enjoy the "daycare feel".
